For the last two almost three months I haven't had a design portfolio online. I had every intention of creating a new one to replace the one I took down, but other things, like this blog and another personal project, got in the way. I've been thinking a lot about it and looking at the kinds of contacts I am and am not getting from my empty website, I've decided I just might stay portfolio-less for a while longer.

There are a lot of designers out there, which means there are lots of design portfolios on the web. Yours is one of millions. Which means it will never be found on it’s own. But because the design community is so massive, there are plenty of opportunities to self promote.

Landing your first design job is always the hardest. Here are a few pieces of advice for students and people looking to get into the field for the first time.

When I look at design portfolios, many of them are not designed to appeal to the client. If you are looking for a job at a agency that is one thing, but if you want client work, you better make a portfolio that appeals to clients. It isn't hard, it just takes a different approach and you need to step out of your designer shoes and into those of your potential clients.
